Abstract
The theme of this study is the violence against women portrayed in traditional Portuguese ballads. The structure of ballads or romances included formulas, motifs and themes derived from oral and written cultures, both ancient and modern. As a general trend, ballads incorporate fragments of epics, fairy tales, lullabies, songs and other narrative expressions in prose and verse, as well as experiences, languages, ideologies, and practices of everyday life. Considering ballads as repositories of cultural, historical, and social memory, the purpose of this article is to analyze allusions to violence against women in some ballads. The objective is to examine how such ballads portrays topics such as physical and emotional abuse. This comparative and interdisciplinary analysis is based on works by Leite de Vasconcellos (1886); Câmara Cascudo (1984; 1986; 2005); Manuel da Costa Fontes (1994; 2004); Casey Dué (2006); Ruth Finnegan (2017); Rafaelle Milani (2022); and Malyn Newitt (2023), among others.
