Abstract
This essay examines Os memoráveis (The Outstanding), a novel by Lídia Jorge (2014), based on the testimonies of the characters throughout the narrative as to a central event in Portuguese national life: the Carnation Revolution. The text is aimed at considering the testimonies as significant sources for a reflection on the relationships between memory, history, and forgetting, as considered by Paul Ricoeur in his study about such categories. In this perspective, the excerpts from the novel reach an exemplary quality in questioning the recovery of the past, as they express the complexity and risks surrounding the uses and abuses of memory.
